Vruja Beach
A hidden Riviera cove where cold freshwater springs bubble up from the seabed
Why visit
Why Vruja Beach by Boat?
Vruja — the name literally means 'spring' in Croatian — is one of the most unusual beaches on the Makarska Riviera. Tucked into a narrow cove beneath the sheer limestone walls of the Biokovo massif, the beach is fed by powerful underground freshwater springs that burst up through the seabed, creating an extraordinary mix of ice-cold fresh water and warm Adriatic salt water. The effect is visible from above: shimmering layers of different temperatures and densities swirl in the turquoise shallows, giving the water an almost surreal clarity. Just 8 km south of Makarska, Vruja is easily reached by boat in around 20 minutes and makes a spectacular addition to any day on the water.

Vruja Beach — Frequently Asked Questions
Powerful underground freshwater springs push up through the seabed, constantly refreshing the water and preventing the build-up of sediment. The mixing of fresh and salt water also creates a striking visual shimmer.
Yes — swimming is the main attraction. The water is exceptionally clear, though the freshwater springs make it noticeably cooler than the open sea even in summer.
There is no road to Vruja — the cove sits at the base of vertical Biokovo cliffs. The only practical way to reach it is by boat, which makes it pleasantly crowd-free.
