Badija Island
A car-free island of Franciscan monks, roaming deer, and pristine Adriatic coves
Why visit
Why Badija Island by Boat?
Badija is the largest of the small islands in the Korčula archipelago, lying just a five-minute boat ride from Korčula Town. What makes it extraordinary is the combination of history, wildlife, and untouched nature in a single tiny space. At its heart stands a 14th-century Franciscan monastery, still largely intact, rising from the pine forests with its Gothic cloister and church. The island's permanent 'residents' are a herd of semi-wild deer — introduced decades ago and now thoroughly at home — who will often wander up to greet visitors on the trails. The bays on Badija's southern shore offer some of the clearest, calmest swimming in the area, and the absence of cars gives the whole island a timeless, unhurried atmosphere.
